History of the Department
The Department of Geology of Arya Vidyapeeth College is one of the
oldest departments in the whole of North East India to start Degree Courses in
Geology. It was established
in the year 1962 at the ‘Pass Course’ stage prior to introduction of ‘Honours’
level in 1967. The first batch of ‘Honours Graduate’ in Geology passed out in
1970. Five students secured first class in that year and since then, this
department is marching ahead towards its goal of achieving excellence. Prof. Nabin Chandra Das was the founder Head of this
department. As
on today, the department receives a large number of students from almost all
states of the North East India. In due course of time, this department could
curve out a niche for itself by virtue of relentless perseverance. Be it IIT,
Indian School of Mines, Delhi University, Calcutta University, Banaras Hindu
University, Sagar University, Dibrugarh University or, Gauhati University etc.,
there are a few respectable institutions of higher learning at the post
graduate level in the country or, organisations like the ONGCL, OIL, GSI, CGWB,
Coal India, DGM, Multi-National Corporate dealing in resources or, GIS sector
or, administration etc where an alumnus of this department won’t be found.
Objectives and Mission
The strength of this department lies in its dedication,
capability, solidarity, vigour and vision to excel and keep its rich tradition
alive.
The
objective is to build a strong foundation of conception in the students so that
they can carve out a better career and reach great heights at a later stage on
the stable footing built at their degree level. Geology being a field based
subject, it is seen that the students are exposed to the realities of the
field, mines etc. Students are also taken to some higher institutes of learning
so that they get exposures and at the same time get inspired. Efforts are made
to inform the students about post-graduation avenues in Geology in the country
or on any other queries made by them regarding career as is possible. Efforts
are made to strengthen the relationship between alumni and the existing
students and, the Department has been successful in this regard to a certain
extent. Efforts are made to strengthen the research culture and develop
symbiotic academic association with others both at individual and institutional
level. Efforts are also there to introduce PG Course and / or, self-sustaining
certificate courses..
The
mission is to work relentlessly to groom good future geologists and noble
citizens for the society. The mission is also to make this Department a known
name in the Country.
